We headed out to the back bayou behind Ocean Springs, where there's a small boat landing and a small pier. ...apparently someone is not fond of "Webb?"
Pelicans are everywhere down here - they are so much fun to watch.
We used raw chicken pieces as our bait, and tied it into the bottom of the net so the crabs wouldn't run off with it.
Who knew crabs liked chicken?!!

We weren't having much luck the first time 'round, but Mr. Fisherman here had some luck at sea! He informed us that it' not really crabbing season anyway... but that we might get a few. He said that his box is usually running over with crabs, but it was just a few inches deep today.

Trying the shallow areas... and had more luck there! Some were quite small, so we had to throw them back. The kid on the bottom right ran up and was sure to let us know that his dad shot an alligator off this same dock recently. ILLEGAL???

We tried to supplement, but everyone was out of live crabs 'till that afternoon when the fisherman would be bringing in their catch. Oh well!
Grant was our brave one today - he warmed up quickly to holding them, after learning that they can't pinch you from behind!
I felt a little sorry for them, especially when they grabbed frantically at the tongs when heading toward certain DEATH.
Too bad.
Mary is blowing on the "hot crabs!" The kids loved how their color changed after being steamed.
And, here's a little biology lesson for the day: The female has a large triangle shape underneath and the male has a thinner shape (makes sense, I guess!). We'll probably try again in another month or so and hope for a better catch. The fun was worth every minute though - it was great!
