Somethin's Fishy

Ivan had asked a few different times this past week if we, "could PLEASE just go and look at the animals in the pet store." Finally, I agreed. We decided to make it a planned outing on Saturday. We never said they were going to be buying anything... but after debating it the night before and on the way there... we allowed Ivan and Grant to each pick out a Beta fish. Ivan just looked at me and said, "What? We get to take one home?" Grant was looking at Ivan and then at us, with a huge grin on his face. Then Ivan hugged Grant and said, "Oh Grant, our very first pets!" They were pretty excited.

There were only four in the place (small pet store), so we picked the two prettiest ones and let them each choose the color they liked. Ivan chose the red one and Grant chose the blue one (whew!). On the way home, there were so many questions!!! I explained to them about the Beta, how they are referred to as Japanese Fighting Fish. Apparently, that was enough for Ivan. He named his, "Fighter." Grant initially named his, "Thomas, because he is blue!" I thought that was clever of him. Today, however, he decided to call him "Fishy." "I just would like to call him Fishy, not Thomas, Mom." Fishy it is.I remember my first pet. It was a goldfish named, go figure, "Goldie." It jumped out of it's bowl twice, finally succeeding in suicide. Hopefully Fighter and Fishy will have a longer life than mine did!
